Our 2012 Event Was A Success! See You In 2013!

Wow, what a fabulous turnout we had at our new Creativity By-the-Sea Art Retreat! Over 40 attendees took more than 75 classes... all within the one square mile of Ocean Grove, New Jersey. We got such great feedback from the attendees, instructors and innkeepers, that we're going to do it all again in 2013! So thanks to everyone who helped make this a great success. You're the best!

The weekend kicked off with a Welcome Reception for instructors, students and participating business owners. This was held on Friday evening at the Albatross Hotel. Guests from as far away as North Carolina, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Upstate NY mingled, and met their Instructors and fellow students while enjoying refreshments from our local businesses, Cheese on Main and Yvonne’s Café. Hey, the Mayor even showed up to wish us well on our "maiden voyage"!

Saturday evening a Vendors Art Fair was held at the Youth Temple. Workshop Instructors were able to offer their art work and supplies for sale to students and the public. Everyone was very pleased with the turnout and sales!

Students really enjoyed their classes and had fantastic works of art to bring home with them. For many, it was their first time in Ocean Grove and they fell in love with this quaint little Victorian town.

We were so thrilled by our flagship event that plans are already being made for next year by students, instructors and the Chamber of Commerce! Thanks again and see you in 2013!!

Exploring Wool & Its Properties: Spinning... Knitting... Creating!

Instructors:   Liz Scott, Heather Schulze & Holly McGovern
Saturday, March 24, 2012 — 9:30am - 3:30pm
Price per student: $65           all materials included

This workshop will explore wool and its properties beginning with a discussion and demonstration of spinning.  Participants will be given the opportunity to spin a sample of their own yarn.  Then they will be provided with knitting needles, yarn, instructions and assistance in creating a project of their choice (small bag; potholder; hot plate).  The final step will be to ‘hand felt’ the project to completion.  Projects can be taken before dry or picked up the following day.  All tools and materials included, beginners welcomed.

Elizabeth Scott’s interest in processing and spinning wool began 10 years ago, when her church hired three sheep to mow the grass in the old church yard so that the grave stones would not be harmed.  The sheep were sheared in the Spring and nobody knew what to do with the raw fleece.  So her passion for carding and spinning began then.  She purchased a drum carder and spinning wheel, and the rest is history.  Elizabeth makes make most of the yarn she knits and weaves with.  Also, she spins in many other fibers, in addition to her organically processed wool.

Heather Schulze has been knitting since she was eight years old, taught by her favorite aunt Sylvia.  While always enjoying knitting, it was at age 29, while attending law school in New  Hampshire, that Heather became reacquainted with knitting.  She then began exploring new and different fibers and taught herself the art of felting, both agitated and needle.
